About Peg Solitaire: rules and how it works
Peg solitaire is a one-player board puzzle that has been played in Europe for centuries. The board is shaped like a cross and starts with every hole filled except the one in the middle. Your challenge is to remove pegs one by one until only a single peg is left. The rules take a minute to learn, but finishing with one peg takes real planning and a bit of patience.
The only move is a jump: a peg leaps over a neighboring peg, horizontally or vertically, into the empty hole directly behind it, and the jumped peg is removed. Diagonal jumps and jumps over empty holes are not allowed. The game ends when no more jumps are possible, and the perfect finish is a single peg, ideally sitting in the center hole.
This peg solitaire online uses the English board, with 33 holes and 32 pegs. Tap a peg to select it, and every hole it can jump to is outlined in green. Then tap the destination to make the jump. A counter shows how many pegs remain, and the restart button resets the board. It runs in your browser and on phones with no download, and works offline after your first visit.
Peg Solitaire tips and strategy
- Avoid stranding pegs with no neighbors: an isolated peg can only be removed if another peg travels over to it, which usually costs several moves.
- Be careful with the tips of the cross's arms. Pegs left stuck out there at the end are the hardest to clear, so empty the arms while there are still pegs nearby to help.
- Work from the outside in and keep your pegs clustered near the center; the more compact they are, the more jumps you will have available late in the game.
- Use the green highlight: select different pegs to see every available jump before you commit to one.
- There is no undo button, so think before each jump. If you get stuck with lots of pegs left, restart and try a different opening.
