About Solitaire: rules and how it works

Solitaire is the best-known single-player card game in the world, and this is its most classic form, Klondike. A shuffled 52-card deck is dealt into seven tableau columns of 28 cards, with only the last card of each column face up, and the rest goes to the stock. Your goal is to move every card to the four foundations, one per suit, building up from Ace to King.

In the tableau you build down in alternating colors: a red 7 goes on a black 8, a black 4 on a red 5, and so on. Only a King can fill an empty column. Whenever a face-down card is uncovered, it flips over automatically. When you run out of moves, tap the stock to turn over a card; once the stock is empty, the waste pile goes back into it and you can cycle through as many times as you like.

You can play this solitaire online free, right in your browser, with no download or sign-up, and it keeps working offline after your first visit. Controls are tap or click based: tap a card to select it, then tap where it should go. You can move whole runs of face-up cards between columns. A counter tracks your moves, and the ↻ button deals a fresh game whenever you want one.

Solitaire tips and strategy

• Uncover face-down cards whenever you can, starting with the tallest columns, since they hide the cards most likely to block you.
• Don't empty a column unless you have a King ready to move into it. An empty column with no King to fill it does nothing for you.
• Send Aces and Twos to the foundations right away, but keep middle cards in the tableau while they can still hold lower cards of the opposite color.
• Check every possible tableau move before turning a card from the stock. The stock deals one card at a time and can be recycled without limit, so there is no need to rush.
• When choosing which King to place in an empty column, pick the one whose color is opposite to a Queen you can move onto it.
