About Word Scramble: rules and how it works
Word scramble is a simple, addictive challenge: the letters of a word appear out of order and you have to work out the original word. It is a long-time favourite in puzzle magazines and classrooms, because it trains vocabulary, spelling and the knack of spotting letter patterns quickly, and it suits kids and adults alike.
The scrambled letters appear in large capitals, and you type your answer in the box below, then press Enter or the Submit button. Capitals do not matter. All 30 words are common English words of five or six letters, such as rocket, wizard and yellow, and the shuffle never lands on another word from the list. A counter shows how many you have solved.
There are no lives and no timer, so a wrong answer just means trying again. If a word has you stuck, the Skip button deals a new one with no penalty. When you get it right, the game shows the word and moves straight on to the next, so you can keep a streak going as long as you like.
Word Scramble tips and strategy
- Look for letter pairs that often go together in English, such as CH, ER, LE and ET. Building those chunks first makes the rest easier.
- Try common endings: many words on the list end in -ER, -ET or -LE, like winter, rocket and jungle.
- Double letters, such as TT, BB, ZZ and LL, almost always sit side by side in the original word: button, rabbit, puzzle and yellow are all on the list.
- If you see Try again, check whether you swapped two letters. Your guess stays in the box, so you can fix it and press Enter again.
- Say the letters out loud in different syllables. Hearing the sounds often reveals the word faster than just staring at it.
